Halo Games Ranked From Easiest to Hardest
Player votes as of July 2026

Halo: Campaign Evolved arrives this month, a ground-up remake of the game that started the whole saga, and there is no better excuse to look back at how hard the series has actually been. So we pulled every mainline Halo campaign that players have rated on How Difficult Is It? and lined them up from easiest to hardest, from Halo 3: ODST at 4.08/10 up to Halo 2 at 6.06.
One thing to keep in mind first. These are player-submitted difficulty scores, and Halo lets you play on anything from Easy to the infamous Legendary. A 4 from someone who cruised through on Normal and a 9 from a Legendary solo run both land in the same average. You can see that split right in the data: the hardest entries have bimodal vote spreads, a cluster of low scores next to a cluster of high ones, which is the difficulty-setting divide showing up in the numbers. Treat the ordering as a rough consensus rather than a precise ladder, especially since each game here has only a dozen to two dozen votes.
We also went in with a question: do the player votes match what longtime Halo fans know about the series? Mostly the extremes hold up, and at the very top the crowd is dead on. But the middle is compressed, and a couple of placements would raise a veteran's eyebrow. Our notes are on each entry below.
Every Halo Campaign, Easiest to Hardest
- 8

Halo 3: ODST
The lowest score in the vote, and it holds up. ODST swaps Master Chief's regenerating shields for a squishier trooper with a thin stamina buffer and health packs, then wraps the whole thing in a moody, low-key walk through the streets of New Mombasa. The flashback missions have some bite, but the open hub keeps the stakes and the pace relaxed. A short, atmospheric outlier rather than a gauntlet.
- 7

Halo 3
Bungie's trilogy closer lands near the bottom, and longtime players will nod along. Halo 3 kept Legendary tough but fair: generous checkpoints, a deep equipment sandbox of bubble shields, power drains and grav lifts, and encounters that reward experimentation more than they punish mistakes. The Cortana level grates and the final Warthog run gets tense, but this is where Legendary tipped from teeth-grinding toward thrilling.
- 6

Halo 4
343's debut sits mid-pack, which feels right. The new Prometheans, with their teleporting Knights, swarming Crawlers and shield-restoring Watchers, frustrated as many players as the classic Covenant ever did, and a few Legendary rooms turn into bullet-sponge sieges. A modern checkpoint system and a generous sandbox keep it from ever crossing into brutal.
- 5

Halo: Reach
Reach lands dead center, though a case can be made it belongs higher. Bungie's send-off leans on aggressive, shield-heavy Elites and a sandbox less forgiving than Halo 3's, and the finale is a literal last stand you cannot win, one of the meaner closers in the series. With only 11 votes the placement is soft, but 5.09 reads a touch low for how nasty Legendary Reach can get.
- 4

Halo: Combat Evolved
Here the crowd and the history books part ways. The one that started it all sits mid-table, but veterans tend to file CE's Legendary run just behind Halo 2 for sheer punishment: the endless Flood corridors of The Library, back-to-back Hunters, and a final timed Warthog escape with no margin for error. Nostalgia and the smoother Master Chief Collection re-release may be softening its memory, and its votes skew heavily toward 4s. This one deserves to sit harder than the number says.
- 3

Halo Infinite
The open-world entry settles just above the middle, which tracks. Roaming Zeta Halo lets you pick fights on your terms, farm weapons and upgrade the grappleshot, all of which soften Legendary. The bosses push back hard, though: Chak Lok, Escharum and the Harbinger are real walls, and the Banished brutes hit like trucks. Balanced, with spikes.
- 2

Halo 5: Guardians
The second-hardest in the vote, and the most debatable spot on the board. On paper Halo 5 is one of the gentler Legendary runs, because your AI fireteam can revive you when you go down, turning a solo run into a war of attrition you can usually grind out. What drags the score up is Warden Eternal, the recurring boss you fight over and over, sometimes three at once. That specific frustration, not the campaign as a whole, is doing the work here. History would slot it lower.
- 1

Halo 2
Number one, and there is no argument. Halo 2 on Legendary is the stuff of legend: Jackal snipers that headshot you across a room before you can blink, no per-level difficulty scaling, and checkpoints that can lock you inside a fight you have already lost. Twenty years on it is still the benchmark other punishing shooters get measured against. The players got the top of this list exactly right, and the bimodal spread, a wall of 4s and 5s next to a spike of 9s and 10s, is the whole difficulty-setting divide in one chart: Normal is a good time, Legendary is a crucible.
The One You Are Actually Here For: Campaign Evolved
Halo: Campaign Evolved is not in the ranking above because it is not out yet, but it already has a small pile of early votes: 5.36/10 from 14 players. That puts it a hair above the original Halo: Combat Evolved at 5.18, which is a sensible place for a remake of exactly that game to land. If the remake keeps faith with the original Legendary run, the Flood in The Library and that white-knuckle final Warthog escape, it could climb once the wider audience gets their hands on it. We will refresh these numbers after launch. If you have played it, add your rating and help sharpen the picture.
Rate Halo: Campaign Evolved →The Votes Versus the Veterans
Where the players nailed it. Halo 2 at the top is simply correct. It has been the community's answer to “hardest Halo” for two decades, and the vote agrees without flinching. The bottom of the list is defensible too: ODST and Halo 3 pair forgiving checkpoints with lower stakes, and both are widely seen as the friendliest places to attempt Legendary.
Where we would push back. Two placements look off. Halo 5 sits second-hardest, but its revive-happy fireteam makes solo Legendary more survivable than any classic entry. That score is really a monument to Warden Eternal, not a verdict on the campaign. And Halo: Combat Evolved sits too low. Its Legendary run, The Library especially, belongs right on Halo 2's heels, and we suspect nostalgia plus the smoother Master Chief Collection re-release is quietly deflating its number. Reach, for what it is worth, could stand to move up a notch as well.
The big caveat. Every game here lands in a narrow band between 4.08 and 6.06 on a dozen to two dozen votes apiece, so the middle of the order is soft. The extremes are trustworthy. The exact seating from third to sixth is the kind of thing a handful of new Legendary runs could reshuffle, which is a good reason to go rate the ones you have beaten.
How This List Is Built
- Source: Player-submitted difficulty ratings on How Difficult Is It?
- Scope: Mainline Halo shooter campaigns. Spin-offs in other genres, such as the Halo Wars strategy games, are left out because their difficulty does not compare like for like.
- What the score means: Average of all player ratings from 1 to 10, across whatever difficulty setting each voter played.
- Sort method: Average difficulty score, lowest first, so the list runs easiest to hardest.
- Snapshot: Numbers captured July 2026. For live figures that update every hour, see the rankings page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the hardest Halo game?
In How Difficult Is It? player votes, Halo 2 is the hardest at 6.06 out of 10, and that matches its long reputation. Halo 2 on Legendary is widely considered one of the toughest FPS campaigns ever made, thanks to instant-kill Jackal snipers and unforgiving checkpoints.
What is the easiest Halo game?
Halo 3: ODST sits lowest at 4.08 out of 10, with Halo 3 just above it at 4.27. Both pair forgiving checkpoints and lower-stakes design with an approachable Legendary run.
Is Halo 5 really that hard?
Its 5.43 ranks it near the top, but that is largely down to the repeated Warden Eternal boss fights rather than the campaign overall. Because your AI teammates can revive you, solo Legendary in Halo 5 is often more forgiving than the older games, so we would argue it is over-ranked here.
How hard will Halo: Campaign Evolved be?
Early votes put the remake at 5.36 out of 10, right around the original Halo: Combat Evolved at 5.18. If it honors the original's Legendary design, including The Library and the final Warthog escape, expect a genuine challenge. We will update the ranking once more players finish it.
Are these difficulty scores official?
No. They are averaged from How Difficult Is It? players rating each game from 1 to 10, across whatever difficulty setting they played. That is why the hardest entries show a split of low and high votes. See the live rankings for current numbers.
